Truncation and phrase search

When you use truncation with an asterisk (patient*) at the end of search terms and phrases or quotation marks around multi-word search phrases ("patient education"), PubMed's automatic term mapping will turn off.

  • Write the search terms in basic form and combine them together with AND, OR, or NOT operators. Remember to use parentheses!

  • Edit the search according to the search results to get a bigger or smaller number of results.
  • Use truncation at the end of search terms so the search will catch all the needed word forms, plurals, possessive suffixes etc.
    • You can also use truncation in multi-word search phrases - use truncation only at the end of the last word, "patient education*".
    • E.g. therap* will catch word forms therapy, therapies, therapeutic, therapist
  • Safe search result filters are Results by year slider and language (Additional filters > Article language)
    • PubMed has a lot of search result filters, but some of them may automatically filter out the most recent resources from the search results.

NOTE: Pay attention to the error messages in yellow on the search results page and fix the errors mentioned in your search string! In the example below, the error message says there is a quotation mark missing from somewhere in the search string.

PubMed uses artificial intelligence based automatic term mapping (ATM) if you do not use quotation marks around the search terms or truncation with asterisks (*). It interprets and expands your search, taking into account, for example, singular and plural forms of search terms, synonyms, and different spellings.

NOTE: Automatic term mapping interprets search terms according to its own logic, which may not necessarily correspond to what you are searching for, so the search results will most likely include resources that are not relevant to your topic.

Enter your search terms in the search box:

If necessary, you can check how the automatic term mapping has worked in the History and Search Details on the Advanced tab.

Here, automatic term mapping has searched for results related to both breastfeeding and being a nurse with the word "nursing."
