Example: Combining search terms with Boolean operators in Turku UAS Finna advanced search

Your task is to search information about social media and marketing using Turku UAS Finna search service.

• Social media, Facebook and Twitter are parallel search terms and they are combined with an OR operator

• Advertising can be used as an alternative search term for marketing. Finna:

There are two different options to perform a search in Finna:

Option 1

• Type all your parallel search terms into the same search field and combine the terms with an OR operator. The search result includes one or more of the search terms combined with OR.

• Combine the search fields with AND operator. The search result includes at least one search term from each search field.

Option 2

• Make the most of Finna and try the search groups: type your parallel search terms “social media”, facebook and twitter in the search fields (one term / field). Now you have created a search group. Combine the terms with OR operator. The search result includes one or more of the search terms combined with OR.

• Add another search group by clicking “+ Add Search Group”. Type your parallel search terms “marketing” and “advertising” in the search fields (one term / field). Combine the terms with OR operator. The search result includes one or more of the search terms combined with OR.

• Combine the search groups with AND operator. The search result includes one or more of the search terms from each of the search groups.
