Guide to Article Search: International articles

How to find international articles

With Turku UAS Finna you can explore international articles related to your topic before choosing databases to search.

Important to note about the Search international articles search function:

  • The search for international articles does not include all e-resources that are available to Turku UAS students and staff. Some of the resources are only available in the databases' own user interfaces, where you should do more detailed information searches. Take a closer look at the tab Search international articles in databases.
  • Search results for international articles will also include e-resources that are not available to Turku UAS students and staff.
  • Search results will include a large number of Open Access articles on the web, e.g. articles included in the DOAJ database.

How to do an exploratory search for international articles:

1. Go to Turku UAS Finna. When using Finna outside the Turku UAS network, remember to sign in with your Turku UAS user ID. When signed in you can access all the e-resources acquired for Turku UAS students and staff.

2. Choose option Switch to search international articles:

3. Enter the search terms and refine your search with relevant options. Use advanced search if needed.

4. You can filter the search results for example by content type or topic.

  • If you want to include only full text articles in your search results, choose the option Full text available.
  • If you choose the option Peer reviewed, it will help you to find scholarly materials that are as reliable as possible. Peer review is the process of subjecting the article to the scrutiny of others who are experts in the same field, before the article is published.
  • Other options include publication year, language, and database.

5. After the exploratory search you can move on to a more detailed search of your topic in the article databases available for Turku UAS. More information at the tab Search international articles in databases.

Use databases' own interfaces if you want to get more accurate or wider search results. All the databases acquired for Turku UAS students and staff can be found in Finna > Browse databases. You can also search for databases in Turku UAS Finna:

1. Go to Turku UAS Finna and type the name of the database you are searching for in the search field, for example Academic Search Elite.

2. Click the link Database interface. Sign in with your Turku UAS user ID if necessary.

3. Use the database search and the choices to refine the search results. In most databases you can:

  • Target specific search fields from a Select a Field drop-down menu (for example, only target the Author, Title or Subject Terms field in the results).
  • Limit your search to articles published in peer-reviewed journals (Peer Reviewed / Refereed / Scholarly).
  • Filter your search by publishing date, language or type of publication.

NOTE: Use the Full text option with caution, because it excludes articles that are not available in full text in the database you are using. However, full texts of articles can be available in other databases available for Turku UAS users. To check the full text availability, click the Find It link . More information on the Article availability page.
