Guide to Open Access: Article processing charges

Open access publishing and publishing fees

An open access publication is openly accessible to everyone online, free of charge. Research outputs can be published open access in different ways.

An article processing charge (APC) may be charged for publishing an article in an open access journal (Gold OA) or in a hybrid journal. The charge covers the costs of publishing. The charge can be paid by the author(s), their employer(s) or by a research funder. Charges vary between a few hundred euros to thousands of euros. There are also OA journals that do not charge any open access publishing fees.

The Turku UAS staff is entitled to discounts on article processing charges in some legacy subscription journals. Discounts are based on agreements the FinELib consortium has negotiated with the publishers. Ask for more information about the APC discounts by sending an email to julkaisutiedonkeruu@turkuamk.fi.

APC discounts for Turku UAS authors:

  • Elsevier - 100 % discount on APCs
  • Emerald - 100 % discount on APCs
  • IEEE - 100 % discount on APCs
  • SAGE - 100 % discount on APCs in hybrid journals

See below for detailed instructions.

Discounts on article processing charges

Elsevier (agreement period 1.1.2024 - 31.12.2025)

  • 100 % discount on APCs (except Gold OA journals)
  • 15% discount on Gold OA journals

Turku UAS' staff as corresponding authors can publish their articles open access without an article processing charge (APC) in Elsevier's hybrid journals included in the agreement. There is a limited number of free open access articles available during the agreement period 2024-2025.

Articles published in Gold OA journals receive a 15% discount on the article processing charge. The author must find a funder for the final amount, because the library does not have a funding pool to pay for APCs.

Am I entitled to publish my article open access free of charge or with the discounted APC?

Yes you are, if your article has been accepted to be published 1.1.2023 - 31.12.2024 in one of the SAGE journals listed and you are the corresponding author.

How do I publish my article open access free of charge in a SAGE hybrid journal or with the discount in a SAGE Gold Open Access journal?

Detailed instructions for publishing in a SAGE hybrid or Gold Open Access journal on FinElib's page: Open Access Publishing in SAGE Journals

If you do not receive a confirmation that your article processing charge has been approved, do not pay it yourself. Wait to be contacted by the library (e.g. during summer holidays).

What is an affiliation?

In scholarly publications, an affiliation is mentioned together with the author’s name. Affiliation refers to the author’s home organisation, higher education institution, or research institution, where the author was employed/studied at the time the publication was created.

It is important the articles you publish contain your name and affiliation Turku University of Applied Sciences or Turun ammattikorkeakoulu, because:

  • The affliation ensures Turku UAS gets the publication points in the Ministry of Education and Culture's yearly collection of publication information.
  • Self-archiving is easier when the publication has clear information that it has been created as part of your work at Turku UAS.

NOTE: An affiliation can include more than one organisation. For example, if your employer is Turku UAS and you participate in a project coordinated by another organisation, both organisations can be listed as your affiliations in the publication.
