E-book collections

 

Terms and conditions of use
 

Turku UAS students and staff. Walk-in users in the library premises.
Amount of simultaneous users Restrictions of simultaneous users may apply and vary by title.
Reading e-books E-books can be read on a browser. An e-reader application is not required.
Downloading e-books to a computer Chapters can be downloaded in text or HTML format.
Printing Users are allowed to print sections one chapter at a time.
Bookmarks and notes Annotations cannot be added directly to book text. Annotations can be added to chapters by saving them to a project if you have created an account to Ovid. Create your account by clicking on My Account.
Mobile use Mobile use with a browser. A separate application is not available.

Downloading e-books to a computer

You will need Adobe Digital Editions or Kortext to download e-books (read Installing e-reader software). Downloading e-books requires that you sign in to Ebook Central with your Turku UAS user ID.

  • Sign in to Ebook central, find the e-book you need and click on Full Download > Select Laptop Desktop and if you are using a private or a shared computer. Click on Continue and download Adobe Digital Editions to your computer. If you already have an e-book reader software installed on your computer, select the option Done with this step > Select the loan period and click Download Your Book > the E-book will open in the e-book reader.
Installing an e-book reader software

E-books can be downloaded and opened with Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe Digital Editions is installed on all Turku UAS desktops.

Install the free Kortext app into your computer or mobile device. Sign up and sign in.

How to install Adobe Digital Editions:

1. Install Adobe Digital Editions on your computer. Download it for free from the  Adobe website.
2. Authorise your computer when you use Adobe Digital Editions for the first time. Authorising is possible either with or without an Adobe ID.

  • Authorise your computer without an Adobe ID: bypass Adobe ID by selecting I want to authorize my computer without an ID. Select this option if you use a computer at Turku UAS classrooms or you do not have to read the book offline. You can also authorise the computer later if needed by choosing Help > Authorize computer.
  • Authorise your computer with an Adobe ID: create your Adobe ID by selecting Create an Adobe ID and use it when you authorise your device. Select this option if you are using a mobile device, would like to transfer e-books between computers, or read e-books offline.

Printing

Restrictions vary by title. Please sign in to see the amount of pages available for printing and copying. Click on the Book details icon on the left side of the page.
If you have downloaded an e-book with Adobe Digital Editions, select Print to print the pages that are available for printing. Click Item info to see any restrictions on printing and copying.

Bookmarks and notes You can add notes and underline text when signed in. Books that include your annotations can be found in the bookshelf.
Mobile use

You can read books in a browser or download e-books to your device. For downloading an e-book you will need an Adobe Digital Editions app and an  Adobe ID. You can also read downloaded books in Kortext app.

  • Sign in to Ebook central, find the e-book you need and click on Full Download > Select the device you are using (iOS / Android) and if you are using a private or a shared device. Click Continue and download Adobe Digital Editions to your device. If you already have an e-book reader software installed on your device select the option Done with this step > Select the loan period and click on Download Your Book > The e-book will open in the e-book reader.

Amount of simultaneous loans and reservations You may not have more than 50 loans and 10 pending reservations at the same time.
Reading e-books E-books open in a browser. E-reader software is not required. Select PDF Full Text or EPUB Full Text. You can also download e-books to a device.
Downloading e-books to a computer

You will need the  Adobe Digital Editions e-book reader software to download e-books (read Installing Adobe Digital Editions). My EBSCOhost user account is required when downloading e-books. Create an account by selecting Sign In > Create a new account.

  • Sign in with your My EBSCOhost account, search for the e-book you need and select Download this eBook (Offline) > Choose a loan period of 1-7 days. For some e-books, the loan period is 7 days automatically. > Click Checkout & Download > E-book opens in Adobe Digital Editions.
Reserving an e-book If the book you have chosen to download is loaned by another patron, you can place a hold on it by clicking Place hold and entering your email. If you are not already signed in, you are prompted to sign into your personal My EBSCOhost account. When the book becomes available for you to download, you will get an email. The book is reserved for you to loan out for 3 days.
Installing an e-book reader software

Restrictions vary by title. Select Save Pages to see how many pages are available for printing. Choose the pages you would like to print and open or save the file as PDF. This file is now available for printing.

If you have downloaded an e-book with Adobe Digital Editions, select Print to print the pages that are available for printing. Click Item info to see restrictions on printing and copying.

Bookmarks and notes

There are two ways to make notes:

  • Open the book in a browser as PDF and click My Notes at the top of the left column. Create a new note by clicking New Note. The note is added to the page you are currently reading.
  • Select ToolsCreate Note if you want to make a note that is added to the entire book. This is possible even before you have opened the e-book.

To save your notes, sign into your EBSCOhost account using the Sign In link in the top toolbar.

Mobile use

You can read e-books:

  • in the EBSCO Mobile app,
  • on a browser, or
  • download e-books on your own device by using Adobe Digital Editions.

You need a My EBSCOHost user account to log into apps and Adobe Digital Editions. If you already have the IDs, first log into My EBSCOhost account on a browser and after that to the app. Adobe ID is required to use the Adobe Digital Editions. Learn more under Installing an e-book reader software. My EBSCOhost account requires a reauthorisation every 90 days to confirm that you are still eligible for use of material obtained by your organisation. The reauthorisation must be done in the browser using the authentication method chosen by your organisation. Instructions for reauthorisation

NOTE: You may have to change the settings on your phone, if you are using the latest models. For Apple devices, a system update will do, but on Android devices you need to allow links to open in other applications (e.g.: settings > apps > Samsung internet: settings > useful functions > open links in other applications).

Ellibs will discontinue offering e-book downloads in Adobe Digital Editions in February 2025

As of 12.2.2025, Thorium Reader will be the only reading app available for Ellibs e-books. E-books downloaded before 12.2. for Adobe Digital Editions will be available until the end of the loan period. The browser reader and the Ellibs app will remain available as reading methods.

Terms and conditions of use

For Turku UAS students and staff. No walk-in use in the library premises. Check the user rights by clicking on the § button.

Number of simultaneous users

One user per e-book. See Availability for number of copies and how many are available.

There are also books with no restrictions for simultaneous users. For these books, there is a set amount of reading rights. See Availability for the remaining amount.

Number of simultaneous loans and reservations

You cannot have more than 10 loans and 10 pending reservations at the same time.

Reading e-books

The loan period varies by title (generally 1, 3, or 7 days). Some E-books open in a browser and a reading app is not required, but for some you will need to download a reading app. Reading requires you to sign in with your Turku UAS user ID. You can also use the Ellibs app or other apps that can access similar files (e.g. Kortext or Cantook by Aldiko). Read more under Mobile use.

Downloading e-books to a computer

You will need a reading app to download e-books. Downloading e-books requires you to sign in with your Turku UAS user ID.

Quick guide for using Ellibs

Ellibs offers one reading app, Thorium Reader, to open downloaded Ellibs e-books.

1. Install Thorium Reader on your computer or the Ellibs app for mobile use. Read more under Installing the reading app and Mobile use.

Thorium Reader has a built-in screen reader and other features to help with reading. Read more at the app developer's website.

Thorium Reader is already installed on Turku UAS computers.

2. Search for a specific e-book in Turku UAS Finna or go to the Ellibs database and pick a book there.

3. Select a loan period and the way you want to read the book. You can download the book to your reading app by selecting Download (Thorium Reader). After this you will get a message that says you are about to receive a file ending in .lcpl through your browser > press OK. You can read some books without installing the reading app by selecting Read online (or Read in the browser). Both ways require that you are logged in with your Turku UAS user ID. Read more under Signing in.
 


If all the copies are checked out, the Read online and Download buttons are grey (the cover of the book, in the app). You can reserve some books for free by clicking on Reserve. When the book is available, you will get a notification by e-mail. Loan period starts when the book is in your loans. You can find your loans in Ellibs in My Bookshelf.

4. The book will open in the reading app and will be saved in Ellibs in My bookshelf. After the loan period has expired, the book can be no longer be read.

If you read a book in a browser, note that Internet Explorer is no longer recommended.
Installing the reading app

To download Ellibs e-books, you will need a reading app. On computers, Ellibs e-books can be read with the free Thorium Reader app (see system requirements). The Thorium Reader app is automatically installed in Turku UAS computers.

Introduction to Thorium Reader

1. Install the free Thorium Reader app on your computer.

2. Thorium Reader uses an LCP passphrase. It will be asked on the first download and occasionally after. Log in to Ellibs and copy the passphrase from the My Bookshelf tab.
 

3. Input the passphrase and click Submit.

NOTE: Adobe Digital Editions app is no longer available as a reading app for Ellibs. E-books downloaded to ADE prior to 12.2.2025 will be available in ADE until the end of the loan period.

Signing in

Sign in with your Turku UAS user ID by clicking Download or Read Online or the Log in link. Signing into the Ellibs application > Read more under Mobile use.

Troubleshooting

Problems with opening links:

  • Change the browser
  • Update your browser to the latest version
  • Clear the browser cache
  • Open the link in Incognito or InPrivate mode
  • Open the e-book with the Ellibs app
  • Go to the Ellibs user interface via Turku UAS Finna and get the e-book through there
  • Reset the browser to factory settings:
    • Chrome: more options icon (three dots on top of each other) > Settings > Reset settings
    • Firefox: menu icon (three lines) > Help > More troubleshooting information > Refresh Firefox > Refresh Firefox > Finish
    • Edge: ... (three dots) > Settings > Reset settings

Problems in opening a downloaded e-book:

  • Check that you have the latest version of the Thorium Reader or any other reader. Read more under Installing the reading app and Mobile use.
  • Set your computer to open a .lcpl file in the Thorium Reader or a reader that supports the file format, e.g. Kortext or Cantook by Aldiko.
    • Look for the file with File explorer > right click on the mouse > Open in app > Select another app > select app and check the Always use this app to open .lcpl files box. > OK.

Problems reading the book (cannot turn a page):

  • Try browsing the pages with Page Up (PgUp) and Page Down (PgDn) buttons.
  • Browse pages with the arrow keys.

Cannot borrow the same book again in the Thorium Reader:

  • Choose All publications on the left in the Thorium Reader > click on the three dots > choose Delete > Confirm by clicking Yes > Open the e-book file again.

Printing

Printing option is not available in Thorium Reader or when reading in the browser.

Bookmarks and notes

Bookmarks made to a book's text that was opened in browser are saved until the next reading time. Annotations and bookmarks in the Thorium Reader are saved until the end of the loan period.

Mobile use

Mobile use with the Ellibs application. You can also try an alternative app called Cantook by Aldiko.

How to get started:
​1. Select Turun ammattikorkeakoulun kirjasto (Turku UAS library) from the drop-down menu in the application.
​2. Click on the Haka Login button and sign in with your Turku UAS user ID.

  • First you are given the possibility to use your own already existing Ellibs Bookshelf. Select I do not have an account for Ellibs Bookstore, if you do not have an account.
  • You can create a free Ellibs account by giving your e-mail address or you can skip this by clicking on Ohita (Pass) button.

If you want to use the Cantook by Aldiko app, search for the e-book in the Turku UAS Finna, download the e-book, Click Open or Download and choose Cantook by Aldiko as the e-book reading app. Cantook by Aldiko requires an LCP passphrase you can find under the My Bookshelf tab.

Loan period, amount of simultaneous loans and reservations Loan period varies by title (either 1 and 3 days or 1, 10 and 21 days). You may not have more than 10 loans and 10 pending reservations at the same time. Loans can be renewed three times.
Reading e-books E-books open in a browser. E-reader software is not required. Select Read online. You can also download e-books to your own device. Read more under Installing e-book reader software and Mobile use.
Downloading e-books to desktops and laptops

You will need the Adobe Digital Editions e-book reader software or app (only for iOS devices) to download e-books. Read more under Installing e-book reader software and Mobile use.

Renewing loans

To renew your loans, click My account > Current dowloads tab > Extend loan. A pop-up window that says Title reserved appears. This means that the loan will renew when the loan period expires.

Reserving an e-book

If the book you have chosen to download is being read by another user, you can place a hold on it. Enter your email and click Reserve. When the book becomes available for you to download, you will get an email. You will also be notified when you sign in to VLeBooks. N.B. The book is held reserved for you for 1 day. The reserved books can be found on the Reservations tab of your account (My account).

Installing e-book reader software

E-books can be downloaded and opened with Adobe Digital Editions. Adobe Digital Editions is installed on all Turku UAS desktops. N.B. Turku UAS staff: if you get a notice Unable to download. Error getting License during download, try to log in to Creative Cloud and try again. If it doesn't help, contact ServiceDesk and ask to redownload Adobe Digital Editions to your laptop.

2. Authorize your computer when you use Adobe Digital Editions for the first time. 

  • Authorize your computer with Adobe ID: create your Adobe ID by selecting Create an Adobe ID and use it when you authorize your device. Select this option if you are using a mobile device, would like to move e-books between computers or read e-books offline.

Printing

Restrictions vary by title. On Read online mode click the Print icon at the top right corner of the page to see how many pages are available for printing. Choose the pages you would like to print or save the file as PDF. This file is now available for printing.

If you have downloaded an e-book with Adobe Digital Editions, click Item info to see restrictions on printing and copying. Click Print to choose what pages to print.

Bookmarks and notes

Make notes:

  • Open the book in a Read online mode and select Annotations (box and pen icon) from the menu on the left. Create a new note by clicking Note icon. The note will be placed on the page you are reading. Notes are not available for downloaded books.

There are two ways to make bookmarks on Read online mode:

  • Open the book in a Read online mode and select Annotations (box and paper icon) from the menu on the left. Click Bookmark icon. The bookmark is added to the page you are currently reading.
  • Move mouse to the top right corner of the page until light blue bookmark appears. Click the bookmark to Create a new bookmark.

On downloaded book you can create bookmarks by clicking Create bookmark on the top left side of the page. 

Notes and bookmarks will remain until the book is returned. 

Mobile use

You can read e-books in a browser or download e-books on your own device by using  Adobe Digital Editions. To do this you will also need an Adobe ID.  

Login

The system will log you out in 30 min. Refresh the page and click Shibboleth (see picture).

You will be directed Sign in to VLeBooks pagem where you are asked to either choose or write your institution name.

After doing this, log in with your Haka-login.
