Guide for RDI staff: Research and researcher visibility

Increase the visibility of your expertise and research

You can create an Researcher / expert profile with the Researcher’s Profile Tool in the Ministry of Education and Culture’s Research.fi service. All researchers in higher education and research institutions and people working in expert positions, regardless of their title, are encouraged to use it.

With a Researcher profile you can promote your competences and expertise the way you want. The profile information is available to you regardless of changes in affiliations or job titles.

To create a Researcher profile, you will need an ORCID profile. To access your Researcher profile in Research.fi, you must use a strong Suomi.fi e-Identification.

ORCID researcher identifier

The international ORCID researcher identifier is a persistent and unique digital identifier for researchers. It is a 16-digit number that distinguishes researchers from each other.

By creating an ORCID profile for yourself and linking it to your professional information you will ensure that your research outputs are correctly attributed to you. ORCID acts like a signature that you can attach to your online presence, such as articles, web pages, blog posts, social media, CV, and email signature.

  • Over time, using an ORCID will reduce the need to repeatedly enter the same personal and publication information into different systems.
  • Scholarly publishers may require authors and peer reviewers to have an ORCID.
  • Many funders may also require an ORCID.
  • Many universities expect their postgraduate students to have an ORCID.

ORCID is a non-proprietary and community-based registry of unique identifiers for researchers and authors. Community members include individual researchers, authors, publishers (e.g. Elsevier), universities (e.g. MIT), research institutes (e.g. CERN), and scholarly associations.

More information on ORCID:

ORCID and Turku UAS

Save your ORCID identifier in the Turku UAS Saima HR system, so that the identifier can be used automatically in the following services:

  • Collecting publication data for the Ministry of Education and Culture as part of author information in the JUSTUS service
  • Saving research activity information in the JUSTUS service
  • Saving metadata of research data in the JUSTUS service
  • Collecting staff data to the KOTA database for the Ministry of Education and Culture
  • Creating a Researcher profile and facilitating links to your publications in your Researcher Profile

How to add your ORCID identifier to Saima HR system

  • Go to Saima HR and open My information and the tab Personal Details. Look for Basic information and click on the pen icon.

  • Add your ORCID identifier in XXXX-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX format and remember to save the information at the end.

Research activities

The service for saving research activity information in JUSTUS closes down on 30.11.2025 (see Messi

Research activities are part of your visibility as an expert. A research activity can be an expert task related to RDI, teaching, or other professional activities. It can be, for example, a conference presentation, poster, or thesis supervision.

Research activities are often comparable in importance to other professional outputs, such as publications, so they are worth collecting and showcasing to promote your own merit and visibility of your expertise.

Save your research activity information regularly in the Turku UAS JUSTUS service. You can publish them as part of your Researcher / expert profile on Research.fi or use the downloadable csv file from JUSTUS, depending on your needs. You are responsible for the accuracy of your research activity information, and you decide which activities you choose to show in your Researcher / expert profile.

NOTE! The library saves publication information in JUSTUS service for the publication data collection of the Ministry of Education and Culture. You do not need to save the publication information yourself.

Below are instructions on how to create a Researcher / expert profile and how to save research activities in the JUSTUS service.

Also read the privacy notice of JUSTUS service.

Create a Researcher / expert profile

  1. Log in with Suomi.fi e-Identification in the Research.fi service through the People page and click on Log in.
    • For first time use, you will log in using your ORCID number or e-mail and password and authorise the transfer of your data from the ORCID service.
    • Instructions to create an ORCID profile are above.
    • ORCID identification is only required on the first login to your Researcher / expert profile.

  2. Select the information you want to show in your public Researcher / expert profile on Research.fi.
    • NOTE: You cannot edit the information in the profile directly, but you can edit them in your home organisation's (Turku UAS) system or in your ORCID profile.
    • Add your affiliation information (employment and unit) from the home organisation (Turku UAS) data, so that it is updated to the profile directly from the Turku UAS HR system and you do not need to keep it updated in ORCID.
    • From Research.fi you can, for example, choose the following information:
    • Select research activities to show in your profile after first adding them in the Turku UAS Justus service Research activities.
      • Instructions on how to save research activities are in the next tab.
      • NOTE: There's a several days' delay before the research activities can be selected in the Researcher profile tool in Research.fi.
    • Select other information from your ORCID profile if you have added any, such as academic degrees, prior work history, and related outputs.
      • You can save the information in ORCID and select them in the Researcher / expert profile tool after a few hours' delay.

  3. Select your contact information.
    • Use your Turku UAS email address.
    • You can also link any other researcher identifiers you may have, such as ISNI, ResearcherID, or Scopus Author ID to your Researcher / expert profile.

  4. Choose which parties you are interested in collaborating with.
    • You can choose whether the media, corporations, scholarly journals, other researchers or research groups can contact you.

  5. Publish your profile once you have selected what information you want to show on your profile. After that you can check the changes you made.

  6. You can return to edit your profile information and visibility any time you want from the same page by clicking the Log in button

Benefits of saving research activities

  • Improved visibility of how diverse expert work is.
    • In addition to publications and research data, other research activities are a significant part of many experts’ work, both in terms of workload and importance.
  • Research activities gain national and international visibility.
    • Experts can gain national and international visibility for their research activities by including the information in their researcher profile on the Ministry of Education and Culture’s national research information repository, Tiedejatutkimus.fi.
    • Information can also be transferred to other services you may use.
    • Through the Research activity service, information is imported to VIRTA publication information service and the expert/researcher profile tool (note: there may be a delay in the data import).
  • Service improves the quality of metadata for research activities.
    • The information collected through the Research activity service is up to date according to the nationally defined metadata model, see code list.
  • Service is easy to use.
    • Logging into the JUSTUS service uses the organisation’s own login (e.g., HAKA), so there is no need to create separate credentials for the service.
    • Your name, unit, and ORCID information are automatically populated in the online form.
