About this guide

This guide aims to support Turku UAS students and staff in searching information. It is a major part of the study material in the Information Skills Online Course.

Why study information seeking?

Efficient information seeking skills enhance and boost the workflow and help to achieve high-quality results both in academic and professional life. Information seeking skills include:

  • the skill to recognise information need
  • the skill to retrieve and locate information
  • the skill to evaluate and use the retrieved information critically and ethically

Information seeking process

The information seeking process includes several stages. By reading this guide, you get to know the different stages of the information seeking process. This guide provides you with tips for creating search terms, choosing information resources, using the retrieved information critically and ethically and much more.

Stages of the process:

  • topic/problem: an information need occurs when information is required to solve a problem
  • planning the information retrieval: define the information need, choose the search terms, retrieval techniques and information resources
  • information retrieval: perform the planned information retrieval
  • evaluating the results: evaluate the results of the information retrieval. Are there enough high-quality citations?
  • locating publications: find out where the publication is available
  • using and evaluating the information: make use of the retrieved sources and evaluate the whole process.
