What is RefWorks?

RefWorks is a web-based reference management tool that allows you to

  • create your own personal reference database
  • import references automatically from multiple databases or PDF files and use the editing mode to add references manually
  • add citations in your text and create a bibliography (several output styles available)
  • share references with others
  • add notes in PDF files.

RefWorks has two add-ins (Write-N-Cite and RefWorks Citation Manager) which allow you to drop citations into Microsoft Word documents. Only the add-ins require software installations.

RefWorks by ProQuest is acquired for TUAS students and staff with annual license agreement. User rights apply.

Upgrade from RefWorks Legacy to the new Refworks

RefWorks (New) has a more user-friendly interface than RefWorks Legacy. To be able to use RefWorks (New), you need to create a new account. Additional instructions are available in this guide under Creating an account and signing in.

Before moving to the RefWorks (New) please note the following details:

  • Word documents created by using the old RefWorks version cannot be modified with the new version.
  • It is possible to create only one account in RefWorks (New).

Moving your references from the old  RefWorks to the RefWorks (New) is easy. Please read the instructions Importing references to RefWorks. You might as well use both versions of RefWorks.
